The 1960s is one of the most defining decades when it comes to popular culture. It is the era from which many icons, styles and ideologies were produced – most of which are still part of our collective consciousness today. So. it would make sense that this would also be the era that helped define graphic design. A new exhibition at 1960s poster and memorabilia outlet, Bamalama, celebrates the designs of the 60s and invites us to Take a Trip back…
Take a Trip
The exhibition, entitled Bamalama Takes a Trip, takes place this Autumn in the Bamalama gallery which represents Nigel Waymouth – one half of the famous 1960s design team Hapshash and the Coloured Coat. The exhibition will “feature a carefully curated selection of rare posters from the era.”
Many of the limited edition designs in this exhibition, examine how 1960s design and print bridged the gap between pop art and tagged graffiti – a unique concept made famous by Hapshash and the Coloured Coat. Their prints, particularly when viewed in a block which is how they would have been seen on the streets of London at the time, created a psychedelic experience, containing images of mysticism, vibrant colours and metallic inks. Their works – for the likes of The UFO Club, The Marquee Club, Kings Road fashion boutique Granny Takes a Trip and even Jimi Hendrix – were designed to appeal to the younger generation and certainly did, with many disappearing to be re-situated on bedroom walls.
Looking to the past for future inspiration
The designs in this exhibition still inspire many people today – and their messages, such as the iconic Save Earth Now poster, are startlingly relevant 50 years later. We can help you exhibit your brand in the best possible way – whether you want to use 60s design to create a retro feel, take inspiration from the vibrant colours and bravery of the era to create something truly eye-catching or, like Hapshash and the Coloured Coat, create a design-for-the-future that bridges the gap between the current underground and popular cultures.
