Case study: The Doula magazine

We absolutely love working on magazines here at the Marco HQ studios. We also very much believe in the power of print and, given its recent resurgence, it would seem we’re not the only ones. We were approached by The Doula magazine back in 2016, and we’ve basically been living our print and design dream ever since. Here’s a little behind-the-scenes blog on how we’ve been helping this amazing team…

The Doula

Doula UK was founded in 2001, as a small network group of Doulas, run voluntarily. Since then, membership has grown to nearly 700 full members and the group has founded the Doula Access Fund charity, as well as introducing a ‘recognition process’ for the skills of experienced Doulas in the UK.

A bold brand and calming content

Doula UK’s branding uses vibrant pink and purple colours which we obviously wanted to incorporate. The content and aim of the magazine is to provide support to Doulas so that they can provide support in the areas of health, pregnancy and childbirth, so we wanted to combine the branding with calming soft pastels.

Evolving editorial

Since we’ve been working with Doula UK it has been exciting to see the magazine evolve, with different types of content and editorial styles. We’re always careful to match design to content so our work has evolved along with the magazine. We’ve used a fun handwritten typeface for article titles to give everything a more personal and informal feel and we’ve sourced water colour illustrations, sometimes blending them into the articles, to stay consistent with the natural, soothing themes of the content.
