We all know that image is everything when it comes to the success of an organisation. And that the little things add up to the bigger picture. In the clamour to create a constant flow of content, businesses of all sizes are regularly using stock images. Getting your stock images right is as important as any other visual element of your branding. Here’s our guide to choosing the right images…
The right image for you
It’s important that the images you select match your branding. If you have a brand that is young and fun, then quirky, abstract images will reflect this. Whereas if you have a brand which is corporate and established, you may want to search for images which focus on the services you provide and are more instantly associated with your industry.
The right image for your audiences
Most businesses now have multiple audiences which they reach across different media. It’s important to adjust your image output accordingly. Slightly more formal pictures work well with a corporate brochure, whereas more lighthearted imagery may get better engagement on social media. Sticking to something that feels right for your brand whilst adapting to different media can be a fine art but we’ve seen first-hand that taking the time to get it right can really pay off.
You’ve been framed
While there are no ‘rules’ when it comes to selecting stock imagery, there are a few things that we would suggest avoiding.
- Because you want to stand-out from your competitors, it’s worth making sure you aren’t selecting an image that has been over-used in your industry
- In the early days of stock imagery, ‘posed meeting’ shots were used a lot. Occasionally these are appropriate, but it’s worth thinking about whether there is an alternative type of image you could use that would look more authentic
- Likewise, keeping pictures realistic is a good idea. If you are a small local business, try to find images that reflect that rather than ‘corporate’ looking photos
Thinking outside the picture box
In the same way that you would with your branding, don’t be afraid to think outside the box and be bold with your image selection. Your clients are being bombarded by information online and taking the time to source an eye-catching, unusual image can really help to grab their attention.
