Given what we’ve been through, now is most definitely the time to look towards the future. And the future is in the hands of the next generation. Designers have helped in the effort to bring the pandemic under control more than many people realise and we are always keen to encourage and develop young designers. In fact, over the years approximately 20+ apprentices and trainees have passed through Marco HQ and we’ve been commended for our work in this area. So, we’ve dedicated this blog to some of the people doing incredible things to inspire the next generation…
Your future starts here
We’ve absolutely loved working with Newham College over the years and the way that they celebrate the achievements of their students. They have adapted amazingly during the pandemic, not only ensuring students could keep learning but even helping them organize virtual work experience. Newham College already offered a robust online studying system and it partners with local businesses to give students the experience they need to hit the ground running in their chosen careers. Whether it’s creating the rising stars of fashion design or helping people with disabilities into work, the staff and students Newham College give us plenty of hope for the future.
As a diverse, predominantly female team, we absolutely loved reading about Sisterhood in Design Week recently. Sisterhood was founded by Rebecca Thomson and Rachita Saraogi after they noticed a discrepancy between the amount of women studying design (80% of their course at Central Saint Martins was female) and the amount of women working in design-related industries (around 22% according to ONS in 2018). Thomson and Saraogi established Sisterhood to use design to empower young women and increase their confidence in readiness for working in the design sector. Not only have they changed the lives of many young women, they have undertaken some amazing projects in the community not least dementia signage in Newham hospital, as well as publishing an anthology written by eleven teenage girls from Stratford on the topic of race, identity and equality.
Your Royal Docks
We love being based in the Royal Docks and have often blogged about the events and initiatives that are happening here for businesses and grown-ups – but there’s a variety of fun things for small people to do too! Join in with Newham Music’s online work with children, developing of a showcase of songs about the history of the Royal Docks; climb aboard the imagination ship for a virtual voyage of games and drawing on the islands of Ifland or join the Newham Chinese Association for a storytelling extravaganza this summer! You will be amazed at what fueling their imaginations when they are small does for their ability to think creatively when they are big …
Institute of Imagination!
… Speaking of which, even closer to home, we have our very own Institute of Imagination right here in our Expressway building! It sounds like something out of Harry Potter and it could well be as it’s team of educators, innovators, mad scientists and magic-makers are helping spark imaginations everywhere through events and activities, training, partnerships and research. Intrigued? Visit www.ioi.london or follow them @Instituteofimagination on Instagram or on Twitter @ImaginationLdn
