There’s been plenty of headlines lately about how design is changing the world – from political to protest campaigns. So we were very excited to learn of the ‘Print! Tearing it Up’ exhibition at Somerset House this summer, which celebrates the power of independent publications from 1914 to the present day and demonstrates the lasting power of print.
Tearing it Up
The exhibition looks at the way in which independent magazines from the UK have changed the world, and examines the rise and impact of such magazines today.
Going underground
From Peace News of the 1930s, to the satirical Private Eye in the 1960s, feminist magazine Spare Rib in the 1970s, to cult-pop publication The Face in the 80s, this exhibition demonstrates how independent printed media has reflected and influenced our culture.
A brave new world
With magazines such as gal-dem and Mushpit launching and thriving in the last ten years, the exhibition also highlights the demand for print in a digital era and looks at the very latest independent print pioneers. Many of the magazines featured address the “unspoken issues of the day” such as diversity and gender.
