The World Illustration Awards 2020

The World Illustration Awards 2020

At the risk of understating things – it’s not been exactly easy lately, has it? It has been a time of change (some of it positive), it has been a time of coming together whilst remaining apart and it has, no doubt, been a time of reflection and inspiration for artists for generations to come. But it has not been easy. If you want a bit of a break from it all, we would strongly recommend having a look at the longlist of the World Illustration Awards 2020. Even if you don’t think you are into illustration, we defy anyone to look at the vast selection of vibrant illustrations and not see something they love…

Big fans of illustration

As far back as 2018, we’ve been blogging about our love of illustration and illustrative branding and what it can do for brands. So, naturally, we are avid followers of the World Illustration Awards

Illustrating and celebrating diversity

Illustration is used by many brands and organisations who want to appeal to a wide-range of people as it is a great format to represent diversity in a way that feels natural, authentic and friendly. In fact, in these times of social distancing, illustration may provide a contemporary and friendly way to communicate with your customers or employees about the new normal…

The times they are a-changin’

OK so we did say this was an escape from what’s been happening and, considering these illustrations would all have been submitted pre-Covid-19, to a great extent it is (remember those simpler times when it was all about Brexit?). But there, of course, are some wonderfully satirical illustrations in here which are well worth a look and also many that celebrate the achievements and milestones leading up to 2020.

From the sublime to the ridiculous

But in addition to the ‘real life’ stuff, there are (thankfully) many illustrations based on fantasy, magic and just beautiful imagery. These are often book covers. Marcomedia has a history of working with authors of all genres, designing book covers that will appeal to their readers. It is also worth looking at the list just for the entries from the packaging category, showing amazing packaging-as-art which will provide plenty of inspiration for any brand. And the playfulness of works such as Neon Lights by Shira Noc, which depicts a comical neon bunny drinking through a straw, means that there is literally something for everyone.
