As many of us think about jetting off to sunnier places, we thought it might be a good time to tell you about one of our more international clients, Athol Evans Complex, and their unique hospital and sunny complex of cottages for older people based in Harare, Zimbabwe.
A caring environment for all
The Athol Evans Complex was established in 1972 by Sir Athol Evans, Chair of the National Council for the Aged. In partnership with various services, using a legacy left by a local resident, a ‘Frail Care Hospital’ was established. To cope with demand, in the 1980s an ambitious extension programme took place to expand and increase facilities. In the 1990s, the complex began constructing two-bedroom cottages and an on-site chapel and a Community Care Centre (now a library). A partnership was also established with a local ‘meals on wheels’ service so food could be delivered to those unable to cook for themselves. Today there is a village-like feel with over 50 cottages, a swimming pool and regular events. The Complex continues to be supported by donations and volunteers.
The colours of summer and sunshine
Most recently we designed a flyer for the Complex’s Gordon Howard Memorial Golf Day. This is a widely promoted event and it is hoped that it will both attract potential donors from local businesses and the community, as well as raising awareness of the important work of the Complex. We agreed it would be fun to use a cartoon-style design, depicting the native wildlife that the region is known for, playing golf. This also enabled us to use bright, tropical colours to give the event a light and summery feel.
The Results
Although our design was quite a departure from the Complex’s usual branding they really loved it. The pre-event publicity has already generated a lot of interest and staff are hopeful that it will raise significant funds, enabling the Complex to continue to expand its care for residents and local community.
