When you’ve been doing design, web and print as long as we have, you are bound to have rubbed shoulders with the occasional rising star over the years. However, none of the stars we’ve worked with have shone quite as brightly as the brilliant students at Newham College’s Shining Stars event! We wanted to tell you about this fantastic event and why we are so proud to support it …
Celebrating local young people
Many of us here at Marco HQ have grown up in Newham ourselves so we have always been supporters of Newham College and the work they do educating our talented local young people. Their annual Shining Stars celebration has become a key event in many local businesses’ diaries – including ours. It is a chance to honour students who have made significant accomplishments at Newham College over the past year -whether that’s by getting good grades, contributing to college life or promoting diversity.
A glittering event
The event, attended by over 400 people including fashion icon Dame Zandra Rhodes, Labour MP for East Ham Stephen Timms, Governor and guest speaker of University Challenge fame, Bobby Seagull, The Chase’s Shaun Wallace, was co-hosted by Olympian Tessa Sanderson CBE alongside Newham College’s Andrew Mitchell. The event opened with a catwalk show by the college’s hair, beauty and fashion students. We supplied flyers, brochures, tent cards, posters and large format banners so that the event’s fabulous branding was displayed everywhere possible.
Our shining star
We have a proud history of supporting local young people in their careers, so we jumped at the chance of sponsoring the Work Ready Student of the Year award. And the award could not have gone to a better person. Alistair Hideg undertook Newham College’s Steps to Enterprise course to achieve his ambition of starting a business, after overcoming a number of challenges including homelessness. Alistair is a true team leader, team player, entrepreneur and inspiration to anyone wanting to change their life through education and training. Congratulations Alistair – we can’t wait to see what you do next!
