Early details of the London Design Festival (LDF) 2022 have been released this summer and the theme is one close to our hearts: supporting designers. In its 20th year, the London Design Festival once again places London firmly on the global map of creative capitals. Supporting designers has always been important to us for obvious reasons but now more than ever we believe it should be important to everyone – here’s why…
Why is this important?
It is estimated that one in six people in London work in the creative industries. A majority of these will be in junior roles that are low-paid or freelance, where pay is never guaranteed. The cost-of-living crisis combined with uncertainty around Brexit and the pandemic has hit the creative industry hard. So, it’s important to support designers by showcasing and celebrating their work, working with them and recommending them. This will also help to encourage more fresh talent from a diverse range of backgrounds into the industry. We recently announced our commitment to the Real Living Wage as a way of helping the creatives who work for us and we have a proud history of working with up-and-coming designers, giving them their first ‘foot in the door’ to this competitive sector.
Why is this important to me?
Design impacts your life probably in many more ways than you realise. Obviously if you’re a business owner, marketing manager, communications officer or any other type of person who needs to engage the public, design, print and web will be an integral part of what you do. But in our personal lives too, design is everything. From the products we buy to the brands we support to who we follow on social media to the TV shows we watch to the way we all kept safe during the pandemic – designers heavily influenced all of these things. And that’s just graphic designers like us. When you factor in product designers – and even architectural design – you begin to see how our entire world is shaped by design.
How can I get involved?
The London Design Festival takes place from 17th to 25th September 2022. There will be landmark projects in the centre of London for the public to witness and interact with, while the V&A Museum will act as the festival hub once again, showcasing incredible and thought-provoking projects. From North to South and East to West there will be Design Districts across London and there will be fairs and forums for everyone working in the design sector.
