So, imagine our reaction when we heard who our new neighbour might be…
… none other than the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan! You may have also seen the reports that, in addition to taking a voluntary pay cut of 10% in a cost-saving bid to protect vital services – the Mayor is also considering moving City Hall to the Royal Docks.
The move would save the Greater London Authority £55million over five years and, if it goes ahead, notice would be given in September for a December 2021 transition. The Mayor would be working from The Crystal – just a five-minute stroll from us at Expressway Studios!
Better yet, he shares our passion for the Royal Docks area and its regeneration, quoted in the Newham Recorder as saying, “The stunning Royal Docks, with a water area of nearly 250 acres, is at the heart of one of the most exciting renovation developments in the capital, bringing more jobs, housing and a thriving new business district to east London.
“It’s a great opportunity to have London government in our borough and I’m looking forward to welcoming the mayor, Assembly Members and the City Hall team to this magnificent location which is a neighbourhood, rich in history, thriving with ambition; and with a long-standing diverse community who will welcome them warmly.”
We have long celebrated our fellow local businesses and this boost to their morale and investment potential could not have come at a better time. As a home-grown, independent Royal Docks business that happens to be an approved supplier to the public sector with a reputation for saving organisations money, will we soon be having meetings with the Mayor?
